Abs, Running, Recipe, and Crafts – How Random?

Hey there friends! I’ve been wanting to incorporate some ab exercises into my workout routine, probably something that I would do at home after work. I found this “Dozen” ab workout that I’m going to start this week.

I was on the Runner’s World website over the weekend and I read this article and wanted to share it.

It’s All Working Out

“Running is just a form of exercise until you love it.”  FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 2015

I found it super comforting to know that running, the more I do it, the more it will become something that I love instead of just a form of exercise. I am starting to understand what it’s like to be “in love” with running. It has definitely become something that I “get to do” instead of something I “have to do” and I’m hoping this relationship will continue to evolve throughout the course of my marathon training. My favorite quote from this article:

It’s all just exercise, just going through the motions until at some point, if you’re really lucky–something clicks. And it’s never the same after that.

Dear running,

I can’t wait to continue our relationship. Hopefully you fall in love with me quickly and can refrain from breaking my heart – or breaking/straining/pulling/tearing/scraping any of my body parts or muscles. Let’s keep this a neat and clean, PG-rated relationship, mmmmk? I’ll do my best not to cuss at/about you, if you do your best to keep me healthy and happy and on the road to marathon glory!

All my love, sweat, and tears,

Yesterday, the hubs and I tried this recipe out for dinner:

Instead of white rice we used brown rice, and I also added some broccoli into the sauce for our veggie. It was so easy and the only thing I had to buy at the store was the chuck roast – I already had the rest of the ingredients! This was definitely a hit. I love crock pot meals!

Last weekend when we were cleaning out the garage, I asked the hubs to cut up some 2×4 boards we had saved from when we put up our fence in the backyard. I want to use them to make this adorable fall pumpkin craft!

I’ve found so many cute fall crafts on Pinterest – I can’t wait to get started on them!

Thanks for letting me share all my randoms today! I hope you found something interesting or informative amidst this plethora of topics! Tomorrow I promise will be a little more organized!

What’s your relationship with running like? Has it changed over the years?

What’s your favorite season? Favorite time of year for running?

Are you crafty? > I have to have a lot of help from my friends, I’m impatient!

Weekend Recap

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend.

Mine was filled with lots of domestic and grown up things.

The hubs and I sat down and went through our budget for the rest of the month, grocery shopped, did some meal planning, garage organizing, yard work, furniture rearranging…real exciting things happening over here!

IMG_0669 IMG_0670 IMG_0671

Before all of our Saturday fun, I started the day with a 9-miler (my longest run outside, to date). Started with cloudy skies, my favorite running weather.

The run itself was good, right on my goal marathon pace.

Finished it off with some kitchen-floor-selfie-dying time.

Then we got our bedroom set up for our new bed delivery!

And then it came!

Painting will come next weekend, and we DEFINITELY need to figure out what we’re doing for a headboard. But we love it! So does Wilson.

IMG_1430We moved some pictures around in the house and moved our old bed into the guest bedroom.

We were in need of some fun times after all this adult housework-ness (go with it). So we headed out to one of our favorite places, Stout Brothers Beer Market. They have over 20 beers on tap that change all the time. And each beer is color coded so you know all the pink beers are IPA’s, green beers are Belgian, you get it. You get 5 baby beer samples in each flight.

One stop wasn’t enough. We headed to Schoolhouse and got another flight over there!

IMG_1422 IMG_1423

Sunday we headed over to Granny’s house and picked up a jar of homemade salsa. Drool-worthy.

And then we headed to Sam’s to stock up on some chicken for the next two weeks. Our Tupperware supply has severely diminished over the past few months – aka the hubs leaves it at work and it gets thrown away. We saw this 62-piece set for $19.99 and had to have it.

Anyone who packs their lunch every day for work knows how valuable Tupperware is. We’re fully stocked once again. And then, because we are a really cool/hip/fun couple…we bought…

A vacuum cleaner! I know, you’re jealous right? Our old one crapped out on us, so it was time. This bad boy should last us forever, and will do anything we want it to (and it should – do y’all know how expensive vacuum cleaners are?!).

We celebrated a successful weekend of adulthood with some pizza and a little golf.

Last week’s running recap 8/10 – 8/16

Monday – rest / Tuesday – 6mi / Wednesday – 3.1mi / Thursday – rest / Friday – 4mi / Saturday – 9mi / Sunday – 2mi (I felt really weird/dizzy during this run so I cut it short)

Total – 24.1mi = August goals still going strong!

Let’s rewind again to last week where I told you I was making these Lasagna Roll Ups for a new dinner recipe. And we have another crowd favorite! The hubs and I love our Italian food and these were a big hit!

I did end up adding 1lb of ground beef to ours which made them extra delicious (thoroughly enjoyed by my meat-loving hubby). I browned the ground beef first and added 1/2 the jar of spaghetti sauce to the meat and let it cool while the noodles were cooking. Then I mixed the meat/sauce filling with the ricotta/spinach filling in a big bowl so it was all combined when I added it to the lasagna noodles and rolled them up. Delicious. Highly recommend. They take a little prep time and are definitely one of the more labor-intensive meals, but well worth it.

How was your weekend? Did you have a long run?

Last grown up purchase you made?

What’s your favorite kind of food? Any recipes in particular you’d like me to try and share with you?

How I Run Q&A and Craft Night

I was tagged by Meredith at Running With Erasers to do the “How I Run Q&A Survey!” Thanks Meredith! Check out her answers here!

1. Would you rather run on a beach path or a mountain trail?

Beach, for sure. Mountains = hills. I’m not about that.

2. If you could choose the flavor of Gatorade at your next race’s aid stations, what would it be?

I love the yellow gatorade. I don’t even know what the flavor is, lemon lime maybe? I’m old school, yellow all the way.

3. If I gave you a $100 gift card to a running store, what would you purchase with it?

All of the tank tops. GIVE ME ALL OF THE TANK TOPS!!!!

4. Do you prefer to follow a training plan, or wake up and decide how far and fast you want to go?

I like to make it up as I go and see how my body feels and go off of that. If I’m training for a race like a half or full marathon, I definitely want someone to tell me how far I need to go in order to be ready for the race. But if it’s just a normal run, I’ll make it up as I go.

5. Would you rather start your run with an uphill and end with a downhill, or start with a downhill and end with an uphill?

Oh – lordy. I want to start uphill and end downhill. All day.

6. When you can’t run, what kind of cross training do you choose to do?

I like being at the gym and using the weights. I hate the elliptical, that’s torture. At my old gym they offered spin classes, my new gym doesn’t. I really enjoy spin.

7. What is your preference: out-and-back, point-to-point, or loop?

A loop. I like new and fresh scenery for the entire race. Although I do love the out and back when you make the turn to go back, I love getting to run past all the other people behind me. A – it’s motivating to see I’m not in dead last, and B – it gives me a little extra push to make the second half of the race faster than the first.

8. If you could recommend any running gear or items to a new runner, what would it be?

I would tell them to invest in good socks, padded socks. Toenails are precious gifts, try to protect them as well as you possibly can. Good socks will also save your feet from blisters. Experia socks are my favorite.

9. Do you see any animals on your runs?

YES! I run past a little farm with goats and horses. Sometimes they have a donkey out there (my Blondie friend LOVES when the donkey is out). The baby goats are THE CUTEST!!!

10. Ever gotten lost while on a run?

Surprisingly, no. I say ‘surprisingly’ because it takes me 15 seconds (minimum) to figure out my left from my right. Sometimes I have to stop at the top of a hill and really think hard about which way I need to turn to get back to my house, but it’s a quick turn around if I realize I went the wrong way.

11. If you could have one meal ready and waiting for you at home after each run for the next 30 days what would it be?

I usually don’t feel like eating after my runs. What I’d really like is a big ol’ gatorade. Not too cold though. If it’s too cold it takes too long to drink…brain freeze.

12. Capris or shorts? which do you run in most?

Depends on the time of year, obviously. I prefer shorts because I get hot really quickly. But I’m also a fan of capris because you don’t have to worry about them riding up or chafing.

13. At what mile (or how many minutes) into a run do you feel like your body is completely warmed up?

Probably around mile 4. If I make it to mile 4 I can usually talk myself into pushing through whatever mileage I’ve got left. If I get to mile 4 and my body is still hating me, I usually stop there.

14. What do you do with your key when you run?

I usually start my runs from my house so I don’t need a key. If I do drive out somewhere I am able to leave my keys in my car because I have one of those fancy keyless entry things where I can type in my password and it’ll unlock my doors.

15. If you could relive any race that you’ve done in the past, what would it be?

Nothing really jumps out at me, my races have all been pretty fun. Maybe my half marathon in Nashville. It rained the whole time but the atmosphere was really cool and the course was very scenic.

16. What type of run is your least favorite?

Speed workouts aren’t my favorite, I enjoy the longer steadier paces better.

17. When you go for a run, do you leave from your front door or go somewhere to start?

I usually start from my house, no driving required.

18. When running in daylight, are sunglasses a must or just an annoyance?

They annoying. I’ve actually never tried running with them but I can’t imagine having anything touching my face while I’m running.

19. When you get tired, what keeps you from quitting?

Um, nothing? No for real, usually I just try to think about how close I am to home, or thinking about the end of a long race and you always have to finish strong. So I just pretend I’m almost done and tell myself to stay strong!

I nominate these bloggers to join in and take part in the survey:

Jessie Loves to Run

I Don’t Eat That

Happily Twenty Something

Last night was girl’s night at Blondie’s house. She had a bunch of old window panes that we made into chalkboard/wine cork wall decorations. Rach used a big  window pane to make a cute sign for her and M’s wedding next year, and Blondie, Rommie and I made panes divided into chalkboard and wine cork picture board panes.

It was really easy and didn’t take very long at all! All we needed were wine corks, chalkboard paint and a glue gun! Rach’s (bottom pic) was a little more intricate – she used stencils to paint the letters on her window.

And my finished product…

Not sure where I’m going to hang it yet…stay tuned for pics.

And, just because I love her and because she’s the hostest with the mostest…Blondie and I watched some of the CMA Fest that she recorded Tuesday night. She’s in love with Eric Church. She grabbed her wine glass when he came on and swooned over him singing.

We’re almost to Friday, friends! Hang in there!

Answer one of the “How I Run” questions!

Have you made any fun and simple crafts lately?

Am I Weird, Living Single, and My New Mantra

Happy Wednesday!

Everyone has quirks, little things about them that make them uniquely them. I’m just curious if some of the little things I do make me weird or if there are other people out there who have the same quirky habits!

Am I weird?

When I unload the dishwasher, I have to stack the plates and bowls in a certain order. If I pull out clean plates or bowls from the dishwasher I have to put them underneath the clean dishes that are still in the cabinet that didn’t get used. I don’t want the same plates to always be stacked on the top because those are the ones that will always get used and the ones on the bottom of the stack will feel left out. So the fresh-out-of-the-dishwasher dishes go in the bottom of the stack. Weird?

I have to carry chapstick on me at all times. And it has to be the Cherry Chap-Stick brand, nothing else will do. I have a stick of chapstick on my nightstand, in my car, in the hubs’ car, at my desk at work, and in my purse. That’s not that weird is it?!

I can’t go to bed with dirty dishes in my kitchen. I literally won’t be able to sleep if I know that there are dishes sitting downstairs that haven’t been washed. That’s just sanitary, not weird, right?

Occasionally the hubs has to travel for work and me and the dogs get to hold down the fort. I like to take this time to revisit my college years and live as a single gal and do a throw-back grocery shopping trip.

image7Some of my purchases have changed a bit since my college days, but the staples are pretty much the same: mac & cheese, popcorn, and strawberries. I always have chicken in the freezer so that’s my main protein (if I even incorporate one), but most of my single-girl meals revolved around pasta and popcorn.

One of my healthier lifestyle / “you can’t eat like you’re 18 forever” go-to’s for dinner is roasted broccoli and mushrooms. It is amazing, AMAZING. Just take fresh broccoli and mushrooms, toss them with some olive oil, garlic, and parmesan cheese and bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes.

A sample meal combination of single Katherine and married/healthy Katherine:

Best of both worlds.

The hubs and I have been together for about 2 years so most will say we are still in the “newlywed” stage. Probably true, but there are still plenty of things I enjoy about having the house to myself for a few days:

* The obvious, having the whole bed to myself

*Letting both dogs sleep in the bed with me (when the hubs is here, only Mila gets to sleep in the bed with us. Perks of being little)

* I don’t have to cook a nutritionally complete meal – mac & cheese and broccoli is just fine, no protein needed!

* I get 100% control of the remote which means Chopped re-runs ALL DAY

* I get to pick the movie I fall asleep to at night. Chick flicks on repeat.

* All of the dirty laundry makes it into the basket and I’m not picking up behind him because I’m OCD about everything being put away (not that he’s messy, I just can’t stand things not being in their place)

* I don’t have to go snatch the toothpaste out of the shower in the morning (who brushes their teeth in the shower?!), it’s right where it’s supposed to be on the counter next to the toothbrushes.

Just a few minor things, none of them make up for how much I hate when he’s away!

So, sometimes, you put something out in the universe, and the universe is nice and says, “Yea, you’re right. See?” I found this article yesterday when browsing Women’s Running and it affirmed my decision to stop pressuring myself so much before I start my marathon training.

What Happens When You Experience Running Burnout?

“This is stupid. I hate this. This is stupid. I hate this.” Over and over again, those two sentences rolled through my mind for the last, oh, 13 miles of my most recent marathon.

This is something I have to put into practice every day. Starting today.

Am I weird? What quirks do you have? Make me feel less weird!

What types of foods did you eat in college?

What kinds of foods do you incorporate into your running diet?

1/2 July Photo Dump and Two Polls

We are now halfway through the month of July so I feel the need to do a photo dump and share my month thus far. I feel it only appropriate that I annotate the pictures in the form of a tweet (140 characters or less).

IMG_1116The endless supply of cuddles and kisses from Wilson.

image5Favorite $10 find at H&M, the most comfy sweater ever. Get it here. PS H&M has some great $10 deals right now.

image3No, it’s not an apple. It’s a white peach. Currently obsessed, I love crunchy fruit.

IMG_1016In a never-ending search for something to decorate the wall behind our headboard with. Too many Pinterest options. Help me decide:

Option 1 – Line of picture frames

Option 2 – Frame / accent collage

Option 3 – Painted accent design wall

This weekend, the hubs and I are going with a bunch of friends to the Foreigner and Kid Rock concert at Lakewood Amphitheater (I think it’s called Aaron’s Amphitheater now, but I still call it Lakewood, just go with it). This is the first concert the hubs and I have been to together – we have extremely different tastes in music, i.e. he loves Kanye West, I love Lady Antebellum. There are only a handful of artists we could see in concert together without it being absolutely torturous for one of us. Kid Rock is one of those artists (others include Fall Out Boy, Eminem, and John Legend…that’s about it). The hubs grew up in Detroit, so he was raised on Kid Rock. He is beyond excited. I’m still trying to decide on my outfit…girl problems.

This tank would be PERFECT! Too bad I didn’t find it sooner than two days before the concert, there’s no way it would get to me in time. I’m considering buying it anyway – get it at Hazel & Olive for $20!

Ok, I have another poll. I’m full of questions today. I need to sign up for another race this year. Help me pick one…

XTERRA Georgia Allatoona Creek Park 15K/5K – this is a trail run, I’ve never done a trail race before…could be fun?

Back on My Feet Meaningful Miles 4-Miler Race – it’s no secret I’m a city girl at heart. This race runs through some pretty cool parts of Downtown Atlanta and it raises money for some great organizations.

2nd Annual Red Hare Chase 5K – This is a local race around Marietta, one of my favorite areas to run. You get a souvenir glass from Red Hare brewery at the finish…enticing.

Today’s 5 miles will be done outside – wish me luck. This shirt pretty much sums up how it will go…

Which bedroom accent wall should I go with for my master bedroom?

Which race should I run this summer?

Are there any cute or funny running shirts about your city?

Some Things I Love and Weekend Fast-Forward

Today is a full rest day for me so I actually got to sleep in this morning and I don’t have to leave the house when I get home from work tonight…that doesn’t happen very often! I’ve taken the opportunity to get some blogging work done, and these guys wanted to help out!

I wanted to share a few things with you that I’m currently loving / using every single day / can’t live without. First up, my Swiffer Sweeper. I don’t know why it took me almost a year to buy one of these, but I seriously use it every single day.

image2 image3Wilson has long hair and sheds all the time, I’m talking tumbleweeds of hair. With the middle floor of our house having hardwoods, this is an essential cleaning tool for me! Here’s what it looks like before I start sweeping…

image2And here it is after…you guys, don’t judge me. I clean with this thing every day and this is still the amount of hair I pick up. It’s unreal…

image1Another current favorite item is my Crystal Light Caffeine Drink! They come in little pouches and you just dump one into your water and it’s equivalent to a cup of coffee! I love this grape flavor, it reminds me of being a kid and drinking grape kool-aid (obviously the best flavor of kool-aid)! It also comes in Strawberry.

image4I have the greatest friends because they brought these delicious little treats to my attention. Fiber One Brownie Bars. Holy yum. When you’re dying for a piece of cake or chocolate, pick up one of these guys and your sweet tooth is satisfied! And, FIBER! That’s always a plus, right?!

image1How cute is this little ring holder? I have a thing for whales, I think they are absolutely adorable. Thankfully a lot of retail stores are picking up on this fact and cute little whale knick-knacks are easier to come by these days. I love this little guy! You can find him at Francesca’s for only $10!

I’ve decided that there’s something so exciting on my calendar this weekend that I have to tell you about it today.

0c1332_cbc883551f6942d9956fa31e353aa7af.png_srb_p_213_80_75_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_png_srbThe Atlanta Street Food Festival is in Piedmont Park this weekend and I got a Groupon deal for tickets for me and the hubs and some friends to all go on Saturday! There will be over 50 food trucks that’ll line the sidewalks of Piedmont Park and let you sample their menu items all day!

imagesWe live out in the ‘burbs so it’s a good 40 minute drive for us to get there, but I am absolutely beyond excited to get to spend the day at the park, and of course, eating! Some particular trucks that are on my “must hit” list:

2. Tracy’s Tasties: Mini cheesecakes…’nuff said

3. King of Pops: This is an Atlanta staple. The salted caramel pop is on my list of top 5 favorite desserts of all times. Drooling.

4. Mixed Up: This one I just really like their logo and it looks like it will be a blast.  I’ll report back.

5. Tex’s Tacos: All I need in life is a good taco. Tex’s doesn’t disappoint.

Needless to say, I’m excited. Hopefully my excitement will help get me through my 6 mile run tomorrow and propel me into the weekend!

Does your city have any cool festivals you like to go to?

If you could make your own food truck, what would you want it to have as it’s feature item?

Mine would definitely be tacos. And margaritas.
